Think you’re good at solving tricky puzzles?
This challenge looks simple at first—but there’s a catch.
The answer isn’t necessarily about complicated mathematics or having a huge vocabulary. You may need to look at the problem differently and question the assumptions you make automatically.
🧠 The Challenge
A man walks into a room and sees three switches on the wall.
In another room, there are three light bulbs.
Each switch controls exactly one bulb.
The man can turn the switches on or off as much as he wants—but he can enter the room with the bulbs only once.
Once he enters the second room, he cannot return to the switches.
The Question:
How can he determine which switch controls which light bulb?
Take your time.
Don’t search for the answer.
And don’t assume that you can see or hear anything from the other room.
⏱️ Give Yourself 60 Seconds
Before looking at the solution, think beyond simply turning switches on and off.
Ask yourself:
What else can a light bulb tell you besides whether it is producing light?
That’s the key.
💡 The Solution
Turn Switch #1 on and leave it on for several minutes.
Then turn Switch #1 off.
Next, turn Switch #2 on and leave it on.
Now enter the room containing the three bulbs.
You can identify all three:
💡 The bulb that is ON
That bulb is controlled by Switch #2.
💡 The bulb that is OFF but warm
That bulb was turned on earlier and then switched off.
It is controlled by Switch #1.
💡 The bulb that is OFF and cool
That bulb was never switched on.
It is controlled by Switch #3.
And that’s the trick!
You don’t need to rely only on whether the bulbs are illuminated.
You use temperature as an additional clue.
Why This Puzzle Is So Effective
The challenge works because people often assume the only useful information is whether a bulb is on or off.
But the problem doesn’t say that you can only observe light.
Once you recognize that a recently switched-on bulb may still be warm, the puzzle becomes much easier.
That’s an important part of creative problem-solving:
Don’t limit yourself to the information you initially notice.
What Does Your Answer Say About You?
If you solved it quickly, congratulations—but don’t take the result too seriously.
This isn’t a scientifically validated intelligence test.
Someone might solve it immediately because they’ve encountered the puzzle before. Another person might approach it from a completely different angle.
The real skill being tested is lateral thinking: finding a solution by looking beyond the most obvious interpretation of the problem.
The Bottom Line
The best puzzle solvers aren’t always the people who calculate fastest.
They’re often the people who ask:
“What am I overlooking?”
When a problem seems impossible, changing the way you frame it can reveal a solution that was hiding in plain sight.
Puzzle Disclaimer
This is a recreational logic puzzle, not a standardized test of intelligence, creativity, or cognitive ability. The claim that “99% of people can’t solve it” is a headline-style expression and should not be treated as a scientifically established statistic.
